We had a great time at the AIMP and CCC “Music Industry Toolbox 3.0” event in Los Angeles on Wed. We met some great folks from AdRev and SoundMiner. It was interesting to hear the discussions about some great new monetization solutions for composers and publishers as well as discovery tools for production music.

Seattle & New York — October 19, 2012 — Longtime music executive Larry Miller has been named Executive Vice President and General Manager for MediaNet by CEO Frank Johnson. Miller is responsible for new service innovation in music and media rights management, partner acquisition, and revenue growth for the company, the largest B2B provider of global, licensed digital music and related data to streaming music apps, subscription services, download stores, and more. Miller has over 25 years of music industry experience; most recently he was acting as an advisor to MakeMusic, developers of Finale music notation software as head of content strategy and advanced technology.

A graduate of Brandeis University and Columbia Business School, Miller (photo here) got his start in the radio industry, serving as the first Production Manager for Z-100 in New York, which became one of the most successful radio startups ever when it reached #1 in the country’s most competitive markets within 72 days of signing on. He then moved up the ranks at NBC Radio Entertainment in various senior advertising sales and affiliate relations positions before moving into television at Tribune Broadcasting in 1990 as Creative Director. In 1995, he joined AT&T Labs Research, and while there co-founded a2b music, one of the first digital download service providers, and served as its Chief Operating Officer. In 1999, Miller spearheaded the spinout of a2b music to Reciprocal, which he then joined as President. In 2001, Miller engineered Reciprocal’s sale to Microsoft.
In 2002, Miller co-founded record label and music publisher, Or Music, and led the company as its CEO. During his time there, the company signed and developed a strong slate of multi-platinum selling, Grammy Award-winning artists that included Los Lonely Boys and Matisyahu. In 2006, he sold the company to SonyBMG and became Media & Entertainment Partner at LEK Consulting, a $250 million data-driven global strategy consulting firm. There, he established the firm’s New York-based practice and provided growth strategy and M&A/transaction advice to clients in the media, entertainment, and technology industries.
Now, in addition to his position at MediaNet, Miller is also an Adjunct Professor and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the NYU-Steinhardt Department of Music and Performing Arts and previously served as a mentor in the Eugene M. Lang Center for Entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School. Miller resides in New York City with his wife and two children.

For music services, 2011 proved to be the year of streaming, radio and mobile. We are now seeing signs that 2012 is continuing that trend and we are continuing to enhance our platform to make sure our partners have everything they need to create world-class music experiences.
MediaNet added over 20 partners last year who are offering a mobile version of their service. We also saw tremendous increases in streaming volume with the successes of MOG, songza and Turntable.fm . Overall we saw an increase of over 70% in streams to over ¾ billion streams in 2012.

We are excited to see this happen! MOG and Telstra’s announcement makes great use of our Australian Catalog. We have been busy setting up and maintaining all the infrastructure of this catalog and rights for the Australian territory. Australians are about to get a great service. Telstra’s customers get an even sweeter deal.
We are forging a presence in a great market which shows a lot of promise. Australia has not had such a quality streaming service as MOG, yet has had a booming music industry in the last few years. We are thrilled to be there.

Rdio was the first international music streaming service to launch in Australia late 2011 and rumours of a Spotify launch have abounded for almost a year. Looks like MOG beat Spotify to the launch stakes and with Australia’s best Telco to boot. This is most definitely a major strike for MOG and its team as it is also for Telstra. Although this is just an announcement of the partnership between Telstra and MOG, TMV have been informed they are not very far of launching.
