Posted by mnopen | March 10, 2015 10:20 am | No Comments

Frank Johnson, MediaNet CEO, will appear Tuesday, March 17 at the Hilton Austin Downtown for a discussion on Finding the Best API for Your Music App as part of the SXSW Music Festival. The discussion will be moderated by Music Biz’s Bill Wilson and will also include Rachel Scarpati of HFA, Mohamed Moutadayne of LyricFind and Tom Rettig of Gracenote.

A full description of the hour-long panel discussion, which begins at 3:30 p.m., follows below:

Creating the backend architecture for a new music app can be daunting, with myriad legal issues, financial concerns, and time-management challenges to address. Many sites are being forced to enter into complicated negotiations with major record labels and publishers to avoid litigation, while others have shut down when these issues became too much to handle. However, by employing APIs, startups can quickly and legally add full music catalogs, online radio, song suggestions, tour dates, bios, photos, lyrics, and more, leaving them time to focus on what really matters: innovation. Explore the top APIs currently available and show young companies how to sort through them.

Univision Selects MediaNet to Power Custom Radio Stations for Its New Uforia App

Posted by mnopen | July 29, 2013 8:34 am | No Comments

It was announced today that Medianet will power the personalized portion of Uforia, the new streaming music app from Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), the leading media company serving Hispanic America. For the service, MediaNet will provide the streaming fulfillment behind Uforia’s Custom Radio stations feature, offering users the ability to create personalized radio stations from a pool of more than 22 million songs, making it the largest interactive streaming music service specifically created for the Latin market.

Currently available for download on iOS, in addition to the custom radio stations, the Uforia app offers U.S. Hispanic’s most popular live radio stations, a deep selection of Latin genres, exclusive digital channels, and an unparalleled level of human curation.

“Univision has one of the largest media platforms in the world, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with them in creating the biggest streaming music service in the rapidly growing Latin genre music market,” said Frank Johnson, CEO of MediaNet. “Univision already provides an excellent listening experience, but with access to our extensive track catalog, the ‘sky’s the limit’ on the number of tracks they can access on-demand through Uforia.”

“Uforia required a complete music experience above and beyond our on-air programming, where listeners could create their own playlists from a comprehensive, well-maintained digital music library,” said Evan Harrison, executive vice president of Content and Entertainment at Univision Radio. “MediaNet has the right expertise, music content, and operational scale to support our vision, and we expect our rapid growth to continue.”

The Uforia app further expands Univision’s efforts to provide Hispanic audiences with high-quality content across all media platforms. Uforia users are able to stream approximately 60 of Univision Radio’s most popular stations from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Additionally, more than 13 exclusive digital-only channels are also available for streaming including Premios Juventud, H2O Music Festival, Dulce, Romantica, La Chula, El Sancho, Planeta Rock and more. These digital channels will feature some of the most popular classic all-time favorites as well as today’s more modern tunes.

MediaNet Celebrates Fourth Birthday of Its Internet Radio Streaming Service with Launch of DMCA-Compliant Playlist Generator and Validator Tool

Posted by mnopen | July 10, 2013 4:08 pm | No Comments

We are marking the fourth anniversary of MediaNet’s Internet radio streaming service by introducing our new DMCA-compliant Playlist Generator and Validator Tool. Powering numerous radio services in the U.S. since 2009 and Canada since 2012, MediaNet makes it even easier for music services to offer the increasingly popular feature of non-interactive streaming to consumers while helping its partners ensure the delivery is in compliance with U.S. copyright laws.

“Our customers want to focus on their differentiation – what makes their playlists and experience the best – and not on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of tracking how many songs from the same artist play in an hour,” said MediaNet CEO Frank Johnson. “With the new DMCA-compliant Playlist Generator and Validator Tool, MediaNet customers have one less big coding task to perform. Integration and development have been made easier and easier since the launch of our online radio product in 2009, and we have many more great services lined up.”

The Playlist Generator function creates playlists based on artist seeds that are input by the user, expanded with artists and tracks that are deemed similar to the seed(s) by the MediaNet Recommendation Engine. For more obscure artists where fewer or no recommendations or related/similar data exists, the tool falls back to the seed artist’s (primary) genre.

The Playlist Validator function takes in a partner playlist that was created either by hand or with the partner’s own algorithm, checks it against the set of DMCA rules (e.g., “No more than three songs in three hours from same album”), and provides detailed feedback for each violation including which of the DMCA rules was tripped. If a list does not properly account for the Six Skips per Hour limit, the user can opt to have the Validator fix this by invoking the Generator function. Likewise, the tool also offers to fix lists that have violations.

A few of the many radio services currently powered by MediaNet include:

Songza

Soundtracker

Fanlala

Raditaz

Playground.fm

Myxer

BYO Networks

Radio 360

Hi.fi

First B2B music technology provider to offer 360° rights administration

January 24, 2013 – MediaNet, a leading digital music catalog, metadata and ecommerce technology provider for music services around the world, is expanding its administration services offerings beyond its current master rights management and catalog fulfillment to cover the complete spectrum of rights. MediaNet currently offers global master fulfillment and administration for a catalog of more than 25 million tracks, to operators of streaming services, apps and download stores.  This new offering  enables MediaNet to take over the rights administration, reporting, and payment processes related to mechanical and performance licensing, so its music service and record label clients are properly licensed, and remain up to date with the reporting and payment terms of those licenses.  MediaNet will be the first white label music service provider to offer comprehensive, scalable master and publishing rights administration.

“By expanding our administration services, MediaNet will become the only company offering a complete rights and administration package for digital music service clients,” said Frank Johnson, CEO of MediaNet. “We look forward to working with publishers, PRO’s, record companies and digital service providers to create a solution that is beneficial for everyone in the music ecosystem.”

“MediaNet pioneered content management for digital music, and over the past decade, has developed one of the most sophisticated rights administration infrastructures in the industry,” said Larry Miller, Executive Vice President and General Manager of MediaNet. “Now, by offering both master-side and publishing rights administration services, we can  remove cost and friction for any company that wants to offer digital music services, allowing them to focus on creating, releasing and scaling brilliant products and services rather than allocating in-house resources to copyright administration.”Miller will be speaking on rights administration and related issues as the business keynote at the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers (IAEL) meeting at Midem on Sunday, January 27, at 11 a.m. in Conference Level 01 at the Palais des Festivals.

From Business Wire
Larry Miller Named Executive Vice President and General Manager for B2B Digital Music Service MediaNet

Seattle & New York — October 19, 2012 — Longtime music executive Larry Miller has been named Executive Vice President and General Manager for MediaNet by CEO Frank Johnson. Miller is responsible for new service innovation in music and media rights management, partner acquisition, and revenue growth for the company, the largest B2B provider of global, licensed digital music and related data to streaming music apps, subscription services, download stores, and more. Miller has over 25 years of music industry experience; most recently he was acting as an advisor to MakeMusic, developers of Finale music notation software as head of content strategy and advanced technology.

“Larry brings an incredible depth of experience to MediaNet, having been involved in some of the earliest experiments with the digital distribution of music at a2bMusic and Reciprocal, to running the extremely successful indie label and music publisher, Or Music, as well as his extensive consulting work,” said Johnson. “Larry is one of the most well-regarded executives in the industry, and I look forward to working with him closely as we continue to expand MediaNet’s position as the leading B2B supplier of global digital music rights.”

“It is amazing to think that back in 1999, a2b music showcased about 5 songs that could be downloaded. Now MediaNet offers over 25 million tracks worldwide, and can handle everything from licensing, metadata, and royalty payments, to customer transaction processing and subscription information,” said Miller. “I’m excited to join with Frank and his team at MediaNet in finding ways to offer even more services to its current clients while expanding its global business.”

A graduate of Brandeis University and Columbia Business School, Miller (photo here) got his start in the radio industry, serving as the first Production Manager for Z-100 in New York, which became one of the most successful radio startups ever when it reached #1 in the country’s most competitive markets within 72 days of signing on. He then moved up the ranks at NBC Radio Entertainment in various senior advertising sales and affiliate relations positions before moving into television at Tribune Broadcasting in 1990 as Creative Director. In 1995, he joined AT&T Labs Research, and while there co-founded a2b music, one of the first digital download service providers, and served as its Chief Operating Officer. In 1999, Miller spearheaded the spinout of a2b music to Reciprocal, which he then joined as President. In 2001, Miller engineered Reciprocal’s sale to Microsoft.

In 2002, Miller co-founded record label and music publisher, Or Music, and led the company as its CEO. During his time there, the company signed and developed a strong slate of multi-platinum selling, Grammy Award-winning artists that included Los Lonely Boys and Matisyahu. In 2006, he sold the company to SonyBMG and became Media & Entertainment Partner at LEK Consulting, a $250 million data-driven global strategy consulting firm. There, he established the firm’s New York-based practice and provided growth strategy and M&A/transaction advice to clients in the media, entertainment, and technology industries.

Now, in addition to his position at MediaNet, Miller is also an Adjunct Professor and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the NYU-Steinhardt Department of Music and Performing Arts and previously served as a mentor in the Eugene M. Lang Center for Entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School. Miller resides in New York City with his wife and two children.

MediaNet Catalog Surpasses 22 Million Songs

Posted by MediaNet Public Relations | July 11, 2012 9:09 pm | No Comments

When we woke up this morning we discovered that MediaNet had passed another milestone: our music catalog just surpassed 22 million songs.

That makes MediaNet the biggest B2B rights-managed collection of music tracks in the industry! And we’re adding more than 100,000 new tracks (plus the album art and meta information) to the catalog every week.

How did we get so big? MediaNet has relationships with all of the major record labels, all of the distributors and aggregators, plus 80,000+ independent labels around the world. And we manage all of the licensing rights for these tracks in USA and multiple international territories. We manage the subscriptions and payments and downloads too.

Being the biggest catalog and the best technology is all fine and good, but what this all means for our customers –- which include the hottest new music steaming apps and subscription services and download stores – is that they can focus on creating great digital music experiences while we focus on the technology infrastructure and content to make it all work.

MediaNet Introduces a Sophisticated Recommendation Engine to Enhance Music Sites and Applications

Posted by MediaNet Public Relations | August 26, 2010 1:21 pm | No Comments

MediaNet’s Recommendation Engine, live today, delivers highly-relevant, real-time music recommendations for any website or application.

MediaNet, the leading provider of digital entertainment content, today announced the availability of a full-featured music recommendation engine through the MN Open API. The Recommendation Engine allows MediaNet affiliates to easily offer highly-relevant music recommendations to users of their web site or application. Affiliates can learn more about this product and sign up today at www.mndigital.com.

Alan McGlade, CEO of MediaNet, stated: “MediaNet has been powering transactions on music services for almost a decade. We have been able to use the knowledge gained from that rich transaction history to create a recommendation tool that delivers the most relevant results for consumers looking to select and purchase music.”

The MediaNet patent-pending algorithms will enable affiliates to provide track, artist, album and user-based recommendations. For example, if a user requests a track that is similar to “Jacosta” by Noah & the Whale, using algorithms to analyze aggregated transactions, plays and user behaviors, the MediaNet Recommendation Engine will recommend “The Comeback” by Shout Out Louds, and “I Know I Know I Know” by Tegan and Sara. MediaNet recommendations will always be current due to its real-time technologies and artist popularity methods.

The key features and benefits of the MediaNet Recommendation Engine are as follows:

Use of actual transactional data

Most recommendation services rely on either software that compares specific musical attributes, or on human music editors who decide what artists to recommend based on certain user selections. MediaNet taps a treasure trove of actual usage data to make its recommendations.

Greater coverage of available music

The MediaNet Recommendation Engine is more likely to give a relevant return on any given track since it is looking at a long history of user activity with a broad catalog. An editorial-based recommendation is going to be limited to high-profile artists and albums.

Track-level Results

The MediaNet Recommendation Engine will make suggestions down to the track level, a feature that is particularly relevant for radio and on-demand streaming services. Many recommendation services only offer similar artist.

Easy integration with other MediaNet services

Recommendations can be added using the standard MN Open APIs that also provide access to metadata, samples, streams, and downloads.

Customers can now sign up for the MediaNet Recommendation Engine at www.mndigital.com, and have a music recommendation feature added to their music service or application in no time. MediaNet operates a high-volume media distribution network delivering premium content in the US, Canada, and the UK for application and web developers of all sizes from niche bloggers to global brands.

McGlade added: “MediaNet has vastly improved music recommendations and simplified the integration process. With our auto sign up we allow customers to find an easy, self serve solution.”
